    Continental Divide: Borderlands Wildlife, People and The Wall

    Continental Divide: Borderlands Wildlife, People and The Wall” is a photo exhibition examining the effect of the Southern border wall on the native people, land and wildlife. The Hudson Valley Writing Project at SUNY New Paltz will host a walking photo tour of the exhibition in the McKenna Theatre Lobby on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m. A panel discussion will follow from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in College Terrace.     The Governor’s Office of Motion Picture and Television Development will host “Locations 101,” a workshop for film students, on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Honors Center in College Hall. Laura Berning, the organization’s location manager, will present a lecture followed by a Q&A session. The workshop will introduce students to location scouting and management, scouting tools and other resources. The workshop is free and open to the public. Dr. Curtis Dozier, assistant professor of Greek and Roman Studies from Vassar College, will discuss the ways modern hate groups have misappropriated Greco-Roman culture and history in order to advance their agendas of hate.     Louis and Mildred Resnick Institute Lecture Series “Jewish Communities and the Uneasy Future”

    Carolyn Dean, Professor of History at Yale University, will present the sixth and final lecture in the Louis and Mildred Resnick Institute Lecture Series, “Jewish Communities and the Uneasy Future” on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Lecture Center Room 104. The lecture topic will cover the cultural impact of genocide in relation to war and imperial conquest. Dean is the author of five other books focusing on the historical and cultural representation of victims. Her most recently published piece was “Aversion and Erasure: The Fate of the Victim after the Holocaust and The Fragility of Empathy after the Holocaust.” The lecture is free and open to the public.     On Thursday, Oct. 24 and Nov. 21, the SUNY New Paltz University Police Department is hosting a free Narcan training. Participants will receive a free Narcan kit and learn how to administer Narcan to reduce the risk of an opiate/heroin overdose, as well as learn rescue breathing and tips on overdose prevention.     Mike Block will be hosting the Ridge String Fling on Sunday, Oct. 27 at SUNY New Paltz. The string workshop will start at 1 p.m. in Shepard Recital Hall. The workshop is open to all students (8th grade and older) who play the violin, viola, cello and bass. A chamber music master class will begin at 2:45 p.m. in Shepard Recital Hall. Block’s performance will start at 4 p.m. in McKenna Theatre. The event will cost $20 (including a free t-shirt).     The SUNY New Paltz Chapter of United University Professions (UUP) and Radical University Professionals (RUP) will hold a rally on Oct. 28 at noon outside of the Student Union Building. This rally will discuss increasing the funding for SUNY in the 2020 state budget. The rally will precede a public hearing held by the New York State Senate Higher Education Committee in the Student Union multi-purpose room from 1-4 p.m. The committee plans to discuss rising tuition and other challenges to the accessibility of higher education.     The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Campus Auxiliary Services will be screening Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Lecture Center 102. This is the first event in the annual “Without Limits: Interdisciplinary Conversations in the Liberal Arts” series. “Isle of Dogs” is rated PG-13.     Professor Nancy Steinhardt from the University of Pennsylvania will be giving a lecture on Chinese architecture on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 5-7 p.m. in Science hall 181. This lecture will go into depth of the structures of the Chinese buildings, tomb structures from Gansu to Korea, paintings of Chinese buildings inside the tombs for non-Chinese occupants and decorative motifs found in murals and textiles across Asia.
