For Barbara Cvenic, Activism is Personal

Barbara Cvenic is a fourth-year communication and media major from Brooklyn, N.Y. Cvenic is your average college student. She’s involved with organizations on campus, listens to Bob Dylan and acts like a complete “goofball” in front of her friends. But, there’s more. Cvenic’s family escaped ethnic conflict in the former Yugoslavia when she was a young girl. Although she doesn’t remember much, her family’s story has caused her to jump into activism and help those seeking refuge from their war torn countries. As Cvenic grew older she traveled to Thailand and immersed herself in the Burmese cause of rescuing and educating nationless children. Since then, she worked as an assistant teacher at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in New York City. She is also an activist through the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) and the SUNY New Paltz chapter of Amnesty International. Cvenic graduates this May and hopes to continue her work abroad soon after her commencement ceremony. Photos are provided by Barbara Cvenic.
