  • Ridge String Fling at SUNY New Paltz

    Ridge String Fling at SUNY New Paltz

    Mike Block will be hosting the Ridge String Fling on Sunday, Oct. 27 at SUNY New Paltz. The string workshop will start at 1 p.m. in Shepard Recital Hall. The workshop is open to all students (8th grade and older) who play the violin, viola, cello and bass. A chamber music master class will begin at 2:45 p.m. in Shepard Recital Hall. Block’s performance will start at 4 p.m. in McKenna Theatre. The event will cost $20 (including a free t-shirt).     Fund SUNY Rally

    The SUNY New Paltz Chapter of United University Professions (UUP) and Radical University Professionals (RUP) will hold a rally on Oct. 28 at noon outside of the Student Union Building. This rally will discuss increasing the funding for SUNY in the 2020 state budget. The rally will precede a public hearing held by the New York State Senate Higher Education Committee in the Student Union multi-purpose room from 1-4 p.m. The committee plans to discuss rising tuition and other challenges to the accessibility of higher education.     The New York State Senate Standing Committee on Higher Education is holding a public hearing on Oct. 28 from 1-4 p.m. in the Student Union multipurpose room. The committee plans to discuss rising tuition, and other challenges to accessibility of higher education. Student organizations such as New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) will be testifying. The event is free and open to the public.   • “Isle of Dogs” Film Screening and Discussion

    “Isle of Dogs” Film Screening and Discussion

    The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Campus Auxiliary Services will be screening Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Lecture Center 102. This is the first event in the annual “Without Limits: Interdisciplinary Conversations in the Liberal Arts” series. “Isle of Dogs” is rated PG-13. Professor Jed Mayer will lead a discussion of the film immediately following the screening. This event is free and open to the public.     SUNY New Paltz is hosting a music concert series of vocal and instrumental chamber music under the direction of Christiana Fortune-Reader, Alex Peh, and Edward Lundergan, including music by Palestrina, Monteverdi and Barber. The concert is on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 7:30-9:30 p.m in Studley Theater and open to the public. The cost is $8 for general admission, $6 for faculty/staff/seniors, and $3 for students.     Adventures in Grant Writing

    The Faculty Development Center will offer “Adventures in Grant-Writing with Ben Junge and Melissa Rock,” a writing panel and workshop where Junge and Rock share their personal experience with writing grants on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. in College Hall 113. Any questions or ideas you have about the process are welcome. The discussion will be geared towards faculty in the liberal arts, but all are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.     Professor Nancy Steinhardt from the University of Pennsylvania will be giving a lecture on Chinese architecture on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 5-7 p.m. in Science hall 181. This lecture will go into depth of the structures of the Chinese buildings, tomb structures from Gansu to Korea, paintings of Chinese buildings inside the tombs for non-Chinese occupants and decorative motifs found in murals and textiles across Asia.     The SUNY New Paltz Biology Department welcomes all students to the campus greenhouse outside the Coykendall Science Building every Thursday beginning Oct. 10. Students can attend between 1-4 p.m. until Thursday, Dec. 5. The event is open to the public.
