Being Digital: The Age of iPhone Addicts

By Holly Lipka and Liz Gaschler

“A desire is never simply the desire for a certain thing. A desire to be fully filled in, met so that I desire no longer. It’s always also a desire for desire itself. A desire to continue to desire.” Slavoj Zizek — ‘The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology’

In Howard Good’s Being Digital class, students were asked to visually interpret a quote of their choice in order to provoke a question within the viewer. Our quote specifically questions the relationship between society and technology. We target the use of Apple and iPhones in everyday life, such as people taking selfies and constantly looking at the world through their phones. The purpose is to help viewers develop a sense of self-awareness of how the desire for superficial, material items has become out of control.
