Romantic Dining on a Dime

By Nathaniel Sheidlower

Valentine’s Day falls around that special time of year right after the holiday season and right before tax returns. This means that, if you’re like me, your wallet isn’t exactly bursting at the seams. So, you want to treat that special person in your life to a nice Valentine’s Day meal, but at the same time you would love not to spend $100 or more at a fancy restaurant.

I came up with three recipes for two (shown below) for a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day — or any day. One meat-based, one fish-based and one vegetarian, all can be made for $40 or less.

The pricing is in line-item form. This means that for some items, like olive oil, the price is that of the bottle; for others, like spices, prices shown are only for the quantity being used. I did this because some items, like salt and pepper, are rather common and therefore purchasing a whole $2.49 bottle is not necessary.
