Martins Beats Challenger by Less Than 4 Percent in 7th Senate District

Jack Martinfor StateAssembly (1)Incumbent Jack Martins fought off a tough challenge by Democrat Adam Haber for New York State Senate District 7 with 38,557 to 29,986 votes, a margin of victory of 12 percent.

This win mirrors his previous races for the position, winning by 3.6 percent of the vote in 2012 and by 451 votes in 2010.

The district includes more Democratic voters registered in the district than Republicans. Even with this unequal balance, Martins was able to defeat his Democratic opponent with the help of the district’s 53,342 registered independent voters.

Martins had a 25-point lead as of Oct. 1, according to a Siena poll.

Haber used both his business background and board member position on the Roslyn school board as stepping-stones to the world of politics. He provided the seeds of his own campaign funding, $79,510 from his capital ventures.

Haber, the owner of multiple restaurants and an investor in commercial real estate lives in Roslyn with his wife, Renee, and his two children.

With Haber and Martins both supporting tax cuts, the creation of jobs and better education standards, their disparities in the highly politicized issue of the Women’s Equality Agenda was the point of divergence between the candidates’ platforms. Martins wishes to remove the controversial tenth point from the legislation, which would re-codify abortion laws, while Haber wants for the agenda to be passed as a whole. This point has held up passage of the Women’s Equality Agenda in Albany for the past year.

Martins previously served eight years as the mayor of the Village of Mineola. He has a degree from American University and a law degree from St. John’s University.

Martins currently lives in Mineola with his wife, Paula, and their four daughters.

Upon declaring victory, Martins humbly thanked his volunteers and his family, pledging to always remember their hard work and acknowledging that without it he would not be celebrating a victorious win.

“I am extremely grateful and honored that the residents of the seventh Senate district have re-elected me to another term in the New York State Senate,” Martins said, “Thank you to the community for once again entrusting me with the privilege of representing you in the Senate. I look forward to continuing to serve you.”
