Don’t kill your TV just yet! Production freelancer and businesswoman Ivey Elizabeth Haber designs sets for film and TV, like Play-Doh’s “Shape and Spin Elmo,” and when she’s not a freelance art production assistant in New York City, she’s a jack of all trades in fashion and media.
Since September 2009, Haber has freelanced for Left/Right, Inc., a production company that creates sets for MTV, Bravo and VH1.
But her degree is completely different from her career.
In May 2009, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in interpersonal communications from New Paltz. Haber’s degree taught her about the intimate relations and communication between two people. It also helped her branch off into the business field.
“School didn’t tell you [that] you had to go get a job,” Haber said. “You have to keep looking and get your own job, and no one can teach you that.”
Haber is a makeup artist too, and founded Ivey Elizabeth in 2007. Her website, www.iveyelizabeth.com, describes it as “a hip, unique, and chic jewelry company for the bold woman who wants to stand out in an everyday look.”
A film and TV production internship with New Paltz alumnus Brian David Cange led her to production design.
“Definitely get an internship,” Haber said. “It was the biggest thing that happened to me.”
“I interned and made connections,” she added, and it helped her break into a field that she truly enjoys.
