Student Profile: The Purple Belt

Kevin Dougherty is a second year student at SUNY New Paltz. In addition to that, he is a martial artist, a purple belt at the Orango Karate System. Karate is in all aspects of Kevin’s life; not only does it’s teachings effect fighting, but also his schoolwork, interpersonal relations, and his overall personality and attitude.

Nearly two years ago Kevin was diagnosed with a potentially deadly pilonidal cyst at the base of his spine. After the painful surgery, the doctors told Kevin his training had to come to a halt and that he couldn’t even think about resuming  for at least 6 months. But Kevin was back at school in one.

Fighting terrible bleeding spells, horrible pain, and a less than supportive family, Kevin turned to his teachings from karate to help him through this ordeal
